Hi, solo008, welcome!

Well, there are root hairs and then there's white fuzz, if you know what I mean. Most likely, you'd realize it if they were root hairs, so it's some kind of fungus. Try mixing around 1 part hydrogen peroxide (3% standard over-the-counter US stuff) with maybe 5 parts water, and dabbing it on the white fuzz with a Q-tip. Most fungus will die from this treatment, though it may take a couple tries. If the fungus has gotten deep into the sponge (it keeps coming back), it might help to make a weaker h2o2 solution and pour it on the sponge. But try to kill it by dabbing first.

its not on the sponge yet garden is only 4.5 weeks old. i think the hot weather the last 6 days is to blame.  thanks and i will try the peroxide

I've seen plant hairs look almost like caterpillars while they're in the air dangling between pod and water.  Don't remember whether they were peppers or tomatoes, probably peppers (I've grown more of those). But they were clearly root hairs - they extended out radially, perpendicular to root, like a bottle brush. Fungus wouldn't array itself like that.

You're welcome to post a picture, though, if you're concerned.

After I lifted the lid it looked like hair.

Certain roots will look white and fuzzy, it's how they are supposed to be. You picture is a little dark so it's hard to see what they look like in detail, they do look to be growing fine though.

Here is a picture from one of my systems, you can see the hair like, fuzzy nature to the roots structure. Click on the picture to enlarge it further.

Yeah, I definitely think those are just roots so you have nothing to worry about. I suppose you could always do some more mold testing to be sure, but I think you are pretty safe there.

From what I can see they are normally 'air' roots.

Roots that are exposed mainly to air develop a 'fuzz' which gives it a greater surface area and allows it to absorb more air gases around it.

Roots that are mainly in water tend not to be fuzzy, or if they are, the water surface tension makes the fuzz lay flat, giving a smooth appearance.

I'll try and post up a picture once I work out how it's done on this board.
