Site features

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Alright, I think this site may actually be coming together...

I got the last of the crucial features online yesterday:

  • forums look decent, work decent
  • subscriptions - email notifications when someone replies. Can also get RSS feeds.

(Peat, you probably need to edit your account settings if you want to get email notifications, because apparently you either told it not to, or I hadn't gotten the defaults set when you signed up.)

Other features on my list:

  1. Subject listings - list content by tag (peppers, lettuce, hardware, etc.) All content can be tagged here.
  2. Rate posts - I like the kudos concept, but think rating posts instead of people would be better.
  3. Better smiley set.
  4. Better "online" icons in forums - add link to IM and website if possible.
  5. Want it much easier to create the kind of photo-timelines I use in my growlog.
  6. Would like bbcode-like text replacements ([i]italic[/i] and :) autogenerate - definitely more convenient for smileys.)
  7. Stats page - hot topics, user ratings, etc. perhaps.
  8. Investigate blog editor API like Movable Type. (I turned on the API but haven't tried it with an external blog editor.)

But - none of those are crucial.

What do you think? Priorities, other features?

 I finally looked into

I finally looked into enabling another editor. I can, and that works... except it would disable the lightboxer, and I don't really have time to reimplement that from scratch. So... For now, please don't use Firefox to comment here. Google Chrome works.

Sorry.

It appears that sometime last

It appears that sometime last month, Firefox quit working to add comments here. I need to fix that soon. But in the meantime, you can still add comments with Google Chrome. Sorry, I didn't change Firefox...

Added Facebook Like and

Added Facebook Like and Google +1 buttons to the site. Actually pretty impressed - the Facebook Like button does a very nice job - try it out!

Yeah, I know, my maintenance here is a bit haphazard.

I've not been on the site for

I've not been on the site for a while so I'm unsure when the problem arrived, I've looked at my windows update history and IE9 arrived on 30th April.

One more problem with it, when replying to your outdoor melon thread the font was totally different in the reply box, switching to IE9 compatibility mode put things back to normal.

How long have you had the problem? And how long have you had IE9?

As in, did you have IE9 for a few months, but just yesterday saw a problem?

I've only just got IE9 so I'm unsure whether it's what you did or the browser itself, I'd hazard a guess it's IE9 though.

Rats, Peat. I don't have IE9

Rats, Peat. I don't have IE9 and can't readily install it (WinXP...) Is this a recent problem? I did change the image properties spiel a few weeks back. Dunno if you noticed, but mouseovers on my lightboxes now show the caption, before you click on them. That could have broken something with IE9, I guess...

Hi Gisette, Internet Explorer

Hi Gisette,

Internet Explorer 9 is throwing up some issues here, it won't let me upload my photobucket images - the 'image properties' box won't accept any commands from the keyboard and locks the thread up.

Switching to compatibility mode works though so it's not a huge problem.

I've replaced the Picasa

I've replaced the Picasa Lightboxer with a new javascript version. It works much the same as the old one, but should also work on iOS devices.

In case you need to turn on/off the Picasa or Photobucket aids, you go into My Account | Edit tab, scroll down to Block Configuration, and click checkboxes on them to include / exclude them.

LOL, Beth - at first I thought this "I like the green" post was referring to tomato plants. Glad you like!
