Purple Leaf/Spot

Hello

1st time planting -  I have started aprox 50 seeds mix veg/flower in my new aero bounty. Its been two weeks and just added 8ml nutrients and noticed that most of my plants have purple spots and the under leaf are purple. Is this normal?

Thanks Ginger

Thanks Ginger

I will try to raise the light to see if that helps and I will try not too stress out too much. I'll just take extra melatonin and enjoy the view as Purple is my favorite color cheeky

Oh, wow, Tessie. I see, the

Oh, wow, Tessie. I see, the seed starter! Lots of plants!

Where I usually see purple, is the underside of tomato and pepper leaves. And with time and nutrition, they sort of get over it. But some websites call it a "purple suntan". You might try raising the lights a couple inches and see if it helps? Like, the lights may be too strong for some of these seedlings, and they use purple like we use melatonin.

But I wouldn't be very worried. Purple happens. wink

Thank you Ginger

Thank you Ginger

What I have growing

Vegetables:

Broccoli (Di Cico), Cauliflower (Winter Dream), Eggplant (Black Beauty), Peppers (California Wonder-Sweet), Peppers (Color Mix), Sweet Pepper (Chinese Giant),Peppers (Hot Pepper Chile Verde Hybrid), Tomatillo, Green, Tomato (Amish Paste), Tomato (Brandywine Pink), Tomato (Grape Tomato), and Tomato (Roma VFN)

Flowers

Geranium (paint box mix), Lisianthus (rose-like flowers), Marigold (Mexican)

Petunia (Favorite summer beauty), Petunia (Purple Wave Hybrid), and Pyrethrum

Some have sprout quicker than others all the vegetables have small purple spots on the outside  leaves, but the under leaf is all dark purple. I have never seen this when starting seeds from soil.

The flowers are not as bad, with the expectation of the geraniums; that do have a darker circle band of purple, but I expected that for that type of plant.

I will admit that when I started the seed starting system I was a bit confused on why you would need to add nutrient during the seed germination, being a soil gardener I would only add nutrients after the true first leaf. In addition the instructions only stated to use 8ml for nutrients for 9 pod, but says nothing about how much to use for the seed system which holds 50 sponges.

The lights run for 18.5 hours as recommended, but then again when working with soil I would run for only 16 hours. Depending how quickly things grow I only plan on keeping these in the aero garden until the end of March, then I will pot up to 3" cow pots/harden off before planting in the soil, then start my next round of seeds for my later crops.

Hope I did not overwhelm you with too much infomation.

Thanks for our help

Tessie

Hi, Tessie, welcome!

Hi, Tessie, welcome!

Purple undersides aren't especially abnormal - depends on the plant. Mixed veg / flower doesn't really tell us enough to be concerned about.
