Outdoor Tomatoes 2015

Wasn't sure until today that I was going to complete transplanting this week, but it is done. All 6 tomatoes are out.

I grew all these from seed, baby pictures on this topic. The two beefsteak transplants are 6 weeks old today, the rest 4 weeks old and look stunted for their age. Lineup:

driveway growbox: bucks county and early girl, both returning favorites

balcony growbox: returning heavy-yielder juliet, and new tiger stripe mix grape tomato

topsy-turvy: sweet baby girl, worked well in the topsy-turvy last year

very large pot: new berkeley tie-dye

All of these were transplanted with organic tomato fertilizer, though the growboxes will get growbox patches eventually. Upstairs as soon as the spinach is harvested. Downstairs only after the bucks county has some fruit aboard. That system worked well last year to reduce blossom end rot.

7/25: applied more growbox standard fertilizer, 1/2 patch upstairs, 1/2 patch downstairs growbox, 1/4 patch tie-dye pot. Also added  Espoma tomato tone to the topsy-turvy pot. Tomato leaves had started yellowing.

Harvests:

537 - juliet grape, first 7/18
242 - sweet baby girl cherry, first 7/18
41 - pink berkeley tie-dye, first 7/18
177 - artisan tiger stripe grape/cherry, first 7/19
34 - bucks county, first 7/26
23 - early girl, first 7/27

Hi Ginger,
Hi Ginger, Set 2 tomatoes so far. Due to temps I'm sure. We went from 70's°F to mid 90's a couple of weeks ago so that reduced tomato set on all the plants. Phooey.

Thanks, Beth! I'm gonna have

Thanks, Beth! I'm gonna have to wait for outdoor ripe tomatoes. wink Though at least now all tomatoes have set fruit - Early Girl set last. Could be all 6 outdoor tomatoes start harvesting the same week around July 15.

How's your pink berkeley tie-dye? Mine has the most fruit set of my tomatoes so far. Very inconsistent flowers, like they're single, double, triple, and quadruple flowers or more. Makes for creative fruit shapes.

Hi Ginger,

Hi Ginger,

Looking good!  Can't wait for the first ripe tomato!  I've got my garden tomatoes wrapped in hardware cloth this year so I can at least harvest what I grow!  Darn critters love the heirloom tomatoes...

Beth

4 weeks from transplant (age

4 weeks from transplant (age 10 and 8 weeks).

The elder tomatoes, Bucks County and Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye, have little fruit, biggest on the Bucks. Of the younger tomatoes, only Juliet is blooming yet, the artisan tiger stripe and sweet baby girl about to bloom. Early Girl may be the latest to fruit, and doesn't look too good. That's OK. I can't eat all this.

Tomatoes starting to take off

Tomatoes starting to take off - 2 weeks from transplant (age 8 and 6 weeks). The eldest have first blooms open. Just 2 days ago, added a Growbox nutrient patch to the grape tomatoes upstairs and harvested out the spinach, and took the last brassicas out of the driveway growbox. Added a soil cover there, too, but not growbox nutes yet.

It's been cold at night this past week - down to 42 degrees a couple times. I think the consistent warm growing season arrived today.

Trying a growbox cage on the driveway this year. Kinda small, but it takes hours to lash one together out of bamboo.
