Outdoor Onions and Potatoes 2016

First outdoor harvest of the year was thinning my green onions. smiley

I started a bunch of white and yellow onions indoors and planted them out around March 25 (2-3 onions per cell in a 6-pack), walla walla (I've grown before) and yellow granex (haven't grown before). I'm not the granex will work this far north, but can't hurt to try.

The potatoes are also planted, but not up yet. Yellow Finn is a returning favorite, and a couple red potatoes (dark red, maybe Red Norland) that started growing in the kitchen.

I don't think onions or potatoes much care about the hard freezes we've had, but they spent the hardest safe in the garage.

Not hugely productive, but

Not hugely productive, but the potatoes and onions were delicious, and onions are easy. They take a long time, but so little space and effort! The yellow granex did fine. They were small, but it's not like I gave them premium growing conditions.

My son made scalloped potatoes out of one harvest, and I made roast vegetables out of the other. Yumm... With homegrown onions, of course.

Potatoes and onions may be

Potatoes and onions may be starting to die back, may just be in a bad mood. One of the onion varieties was yellow granex, which may not be compatible with this latitude (a Georgia onion) - so may harvest small and early.

Onions and potatoes coming

Onions and potatoes coming along nicely. Onions really do seem to do better from seed, planted indoors way in advance, rather than dry bulb sets.

Gave a second layer of soil and fertilizer to the potatoes yesterday. I've never seen them lay more than one level of tubers, so may not bother again.

Drowned-looking, but most of

Drowned-looking, but most of the potatoes are up now. The onions also look drowned. I might buy another 6-pack of onions.
