Ate one last cucumber, but couldn't get the spider mites under control, and the plant died. Giving up for summer. Will try to get that grow area completely sterilized and start another cucumber in August or so. It's better to pull the shades down on that window in summer, anyway.
Ladybugs arrived - hundreds of them. Cuke got a few, most outside. Producing again, and misting seems to have reduced the mite damage. Dunno if the ladybugs can turn this situation around.
Cuke produced 3 cukes, but then the dreaded spider mites returned. I've sprayed it twice with miticide, but cucumber leaves really can't stand up to spider mites or miticide. It's fattening up another 3 fruit at the moment. Ladybugs have been ordered... We'll see.
Yay! Cuke production has resumed. Should be harvesting in another week to 10 days. FWIW, Beth and Nichen - the socrates are very similar to picolino. ("Especially suited to fall and winter production periods where light levels are low and Powdery Mildew is present", saith High Mowing Organic Seeds. Though I bought mine from Johnny's. Johnny's said it was good for cool weather, which seemed helpful growing it in a winter windowsill. )
The second pot remains barren. I think there little bugs in there are eating the cucumber seeds. May or may not germinate another cuke in a paper cup to transfer into the pot... Might be smarter to just kick the pot outside again. It's still freezing out there, almost every night. In fact, at the moment, it is...
The socrates is finally taking off - visible little cuke buds. No joy yet on the second cuke pot, trying again today with 3 more Korean cuke + 1 tasty jade seed. The Korean cuke seeds may no longer be viable, and I only have 2 tasty jade seeds left. Those are expensive.
Beth - I look forward to hearing how the Picolino do! No, these cukes are staying in the window. Was hoping for another 12-month cuke grow, but the September starts were done in by spider mites. It'll be another couple months before cuke season here, even for cool weather cukes.
Are these going to be outside plants? I bought a new variety to try this year (outside then fall/winter inside) called Picolino. Mini cucumbers that have all female flowers and will set without pollination. No need to have male flowers! From Pinetree.

Harvested first cuke yesterday, the second probably tonight or tomorrow. In full production now.

Couple cukes fattening up. It's setting cukes right and left, so I started picking off half of each pair it set.

Hmph. Cukes not fattening. Gave them some acid fertlizer, maybe that'll help. But I suspect the flowers are in the way.
