Indoor Winter Cucumbers, 2012-2013

Last winter's cucumbers survived to September - almost exactly a year, with the final harvest tally 53 socrates and 46 tasty jade cukes - very close to 2 cucumbers per week for a year.  Let's do it again! Same varieties, same planting time, same west-facing window.

 Harvests:

socrates:   11 (first at age 8 weeks)

tasty jade: 4 (first at age 10.5 weeks)

terminated age 18 weeks - couldn't control spider mite infestation, decided to start over

 Replacement cuke plants now

Replacement cuke plants now in big pots, ready to take off. It's a lot easier to get them to "take off" in the warmth of September than the cold of February, though. Expect they'll be at least 2 weeks slower to fruit this way.

 Retired the cuke plants this

Retired the cuke plants this past week, to start over, hopefully without spider mites. The pots went outside for some deep-freeze treatment.

 My poor cukes haven't been

My poor cukes haven't been doing too well. They got spider mites, and I didn't catch on quickly. I used 3-in-1 fungicide-miticide-insecticide on them, but... cuke leaves are tender. So this pretty much defoliated the plants.  We'll see if they fight their way back.

16 week tasty jade and socrates cukes - spider mites damage, used 3-in-1 fungicide-miticide-insecticide, but cuke leaves don't take that well 16 week tasty jade and socrates cukes - spider mites damage, used 3-in-1 fungicide-miticide-insecticide, but cuke leaves don't take that well 17 week tasty jade and socrates cukes - harvested 1 each - not really coming back from the mites (yet)

Cukes doing pretty well,

Cukes doing pretty well, despite miserly light supply. (Too lazy to add another light, and the kid keeps leaving them unplugged...  Midwinter doesn't provide much western sunlight through the window.) For the moment, I'm trying to give them acid fertilizer once every two weeks. Harvested 5 cukes in past 3 weeks.

Tally now up to 6 socrates

Tally now up to 6 socrates cukes and 1 tasty jade.  Happy plants.

10 week tasty jade and socrates cukes - first tasty jade getting there 11 week tasty jade and socrates cukes - first tasty jade and 2 socrates harvested - getting rain and acid fertlizer lately, unpredictable light...

The drought let up - I've been able to give them rain water, plus a little acid fertilizer lately, instead of tap water. Cucumbers do not thrive on my super-hard tap water... The acid fertilizer is actually for orchids - ran out of the azalea-forumula MirAcid. Seems to be exactly the same formula:

30% N (amoniacal and urea)

10% P (available phosphate P2O3)

10% K (soluble potash K20)

0.02% Boron

0.07% Cu (chelated copper)

0.325% Fe (chelated iron)

0.05% Mn (chelated manganese)

0.005% Mo (molybdenum)

0.07% Zn (chelated zinc)

I'm not going to show this grow in detail, because it's product development, but I am pleased with my latest Aerogarden tomato so far:

9 week container choice tomato - biggest 3 of 7 sizeable fruit so far

 Cukes coming along

Cukes coming along beautifully, despite light issues. (Loss of power due to hurricane, kid unplugging lights. ) Expect to harvest first socrates this week, less than 8 weeks old.

5 week socrates cuke 7 week tasty jade and socrates cukes - a bit light-starved due to kid unplugging lights - fed acid fert
