Hey, Peat,
You've grown corn salad in an Aerogarden, haven't you? Are there any tricks to it? I replanted one of my minis with bibb, tom thumb (like yours
), and corn salad - which I've never even eaten. I've never seen seeds like those before. The lettuce were all up by the 2nd day, of course. No signs of life yet from the corn salad, tho.
Thanks!
It's a big round tan seed - would really stand out from the rest of that mix.
Interesting re max 1.4 EC. I've been going with max 1.6 for lettuce. Should maybe even go lower, huh?
The lettuce EC has to be quite low, around 1.2 for them. I've gone to 1.7 with no problems though, I did push to 2.0 once to see what the outcome was - it went very bitter with tip burn.
If you've grown successfully with 1.6 then don't change your winning formula, I'm trying things lower this time to see what becomes of the flavour.
Romaine flavor was very good at 1.6. Looseleafs are awfully delicate - they might do better lower. And like I said, I haven't had great results with the brassicas - maybe they'd do better lower as well.
The corn salad (mache) never did germinate. Dunno whether it was the pod or seed or whether they just don't like being that wet. Planted another lettuce to be sure something sprouted.
I am still curious. If anyone gets corn salad to sprout in an Aerogarden, I'd like to know. Sounds like Peat isn't sure he ever grew any.
You may be right there
, that seed packet seemed to contain so many different seeds... It may never have made it into my rockwool!
Yes, the corn salad came with my 'mesclun mix' seeds which are my staple grow.
Nothing special really, I keep the pH at 6.0 and gradually increase the EC from 0.8 (for starting seeds) gradually up wards - I've actually gone to 1.7 - I don't recommend this high though. The lettuce raft is currently (or was currently) growing this type, I'll be pegging this one to about 1.2 to 1.4 max this time.
Just go through the usual GH stages, seedling, mild growth and then growth - it's always worked fine.
There are so many types of plant in this seed mix, I think I would have difficulty in actually identifying the corn salad from all the others.
