Aerogarden Mid-Sized Tomato

This grow parallels an in-soil under-CFL grow of the same tomato variety, grown same time. I do not believe this variety can produce in simply a tall Aerogarden. I intend to add external lights, and other tricks.

Harvests:

18 - first May 3rd, terminated October 20 due to broken stem (flopped during cleaning)

Plant's looking rather barren

Plant's looking rather barren after 4 fruit harvested. Another couple coming along. They sure ripen slowly... I think they need more light at the end.

Second tomato was even better

Second tomato was even better than first (gave it another 3 days to ripen more ). Had it as a bacon - spinach - tomato - fresh mozzarella sandwich - excellent! Plant still not showing any sign of starting new branches or fruit, but it's still ripening a clutch. Still keeping its nute bath pretty strong, seeking good flavor - and it's working!

Ate first tomato. Yummm! Not

Ate first tomato. Yummm! Not quite ripe, but hey, there are 4 more ripening at this point. This variety has a beefsteak tomato interior, marbled meaty all through. Definitely tangy, not vapid at all - quite good for a tomato plant's first effort! Ate it as a tomato & fresh mozzarella sandwich, slathered with mayo on sourdough bread. Nice supper!

Tomatoes started turning

Tomatoes started turning orange yesterday. Three seem to be ripening so far, including the eldest double-fruit.

No flowers for quite a while, and only suckers at top, where I need to prune them off. I think this screen needs 23W bulbs instead of 19W, and one of the CFLs definitely seems more effective than the other. (Cheaper Westpointe is better.)

Read article in Maximum Yield

Read article in Maximum Yield about improving hydroponic tomato flavor, and increased EC on refill-water to 1.6 (was using light EC water, since the plant drinking would concentrate it, and it drinks reservoir down pretty fast.)

Screwed up a little, and added more Bloom to the mix than I should have (4-2-1 instead of 3-2-1). But within a day or so, first fruit started ripening. When reservoir low (it's been drinking), EC rising to ~2.2 - 2.4, which is sort of what I intended. (Too high and the foliage gets ill.)

Finally received and plugged

Finally received and plugged in new Aerogarden bulbs yesterday. Fruit marginally bigger, and no flowers. Just doesn't want to flower anywhere but into the hood, no suckers down below. Drinks a lot. No idea when these fruit will start to ripen. Park Seed rated them as a week slower than Early Girl - still fairly early.

No real change. Tomatoes one

No real change. Tomatoes one week bigger. No flowers - I've had the lights on in the room at night, and keep plucking suckers at the top, since there's no more room to grow up there. The side lights don't seem to be persuading it to produce flowers down below. Oh, well.

I don't think the new AG bulbs have shipped yet. They've gotten a lot slower than they used to be.

About the same, with bigger

About the same, with bigger fruit. Added trellis supports, as it was starting to flop over if moved the light screen. Ordered new Deluxe lights. I think it's kind of a waste to renew the lights at the beginning of a grow. But this grow is on the borderline of feasible, so... needs the best by ~week 12.

Lots of pruning on top, of course. And some on the bottom, of yellowed leaves.
