Aerogarden Mid-Sized Tomato

This grow parallels an in-soil under-CFL grow of the same tomato variety, grown same time. I do not believe this variety can produce in simply a tall Aerogarden. I intend to add external lights, and other tricks.

Harvests:

18 - first May 3rd, terminated October 20 due to broken stem (flopped during cleaning)

 Ooh, thanks, Nichen! Beth -

Ooh, thanks, Nichen! Beth - you want to see that video, too. Teacher grew 191 picolino cukes with his class (maybe 6 plants), using a $650 6-band LED light rig. The plants lasted only 80 days, and produced 191 cukes.

That's the best show-of-an-LED grow I've ever seen.

Well, pepper plants are much prettier than tomato plants.  Slow, though...

 amazing!! The pictures are

amazing!! The pictures are wonderful! I love Tomatoes....but, I think growing Sweet Pepper is even more fun. I know I mentioned it earlier lol. There is something special with the plant itself...difficult to explain in words...I can't wait to see my first ripe red pepper and eat it. I will definately send a picture of it by that time. Might be a matter of days now.

This grow is long over, but

This grow is long over, but I wanted to put the pictures back up. I've developed the lightscreen I used here for sale, and a business mentor talked me into not sharing pictures of the grow in the meantime. I wasn't happy about that. Anyway - some highlights of the rest of the grow. Summary:  the lightscreen and this tomato variety work quite well, and deliver excellent flavor in mid-size tomatoes. It's a shame the tomato plant didn't last a bit longer, but I wanted to try out another variety, anyway.

Light bulb experiment: I

Light bulb experiment:

I bought eleven Longstar CFL's for testing. Ten are 23W 6500K "full spectrum". One is 23W 4100K "cool white" (is yellower). The 4100K does not claim full spectrum.

Replaced lightscreen bulbs:

Left: 20W GE 6500K, to 23W Longstar 4100K. This is the less successful side of the plant (less foliage, fewer fruit).

Right: 18W Westpointe 6500K, to 23W Longstar 6500K. More successful side of the plant.

Expect: improved growth all around - lot more lumens, and new bulbs. But also, hope to get some flowers on the left side of the plant. Only new wave of flowers forming on the right so far.

Conclusion on past:  the 18W Westpointe bulb outgrew the 20W GE bulb.

Tricky bit: one of the Aerogarden bulbs is coming loose from the Deluxe hood atm - not always on (it is on the right.)

Followup: after running this a week and evaluating growth, then replace with new lightscreen design.

Ate two more, there are two

Ate two more, there are two more green fruit of size developing, and flowers. Not a highly productive grow, though the fruits are big and taste good. And considering the size of fruit, may well be more than AG cherries yield.

Lightening up on the high-EC nutrients while nothing's ripening. High EC is awfully hard on the foliage, and may have been suppressing flowers. Though more likely the fruit load was suppressing flowers.

Harvested 6 tomatoes so far,

Harvested 6 tomatoes so far, and two more almost-ripe (as of Sunday - as of today, I ate another). Cut up two and brought to LaunchHaven to hand out during a startup business pitch - rave reviews on the flavor. The plant's looking a bit barren, no more buds in sight yet. Strong nutes and running the basin almost dry is doing wonders for flavor, but not so much for growing.
