Aerogarden Lightscreen Tomato Clone

I cloned my murdered beefsteak tomato plant in a jar of water. It rooted well, so I transferred it to my AG Deluxe with CropLampSurround lightscreen. The clone and its age-mate sister plant outside now (flowering):

Used mild growth nutrients (5ml each Micro/Grow/Bloom in 1 gallon water) for this week, and placed the lightscreen around it unlit, just to keep the lights reflected back on the plant:

better bush clone, using lightscreen from day 1, minus the lights until the AG hood clears the shelf slots

With the clone's stem resting on the bottom of the AG reservoir, I'm hoping it'll have a few extra inches of headroom.

2013/07/26: replaced AG lights, and gave some half-strength Texas Tomato Food (because it was the liquid on hand and the reservoir was low).

Harvest thru 12/1:
15 - first at 14 weeks, last at 28 weeks - terminated 12/17 due to spider mites

Plant happy. Too happy - it
Plant happy. Too happy - it set a lot of tomatoes! Maybe a dozen blueberry-sized, plus the two bigger squashed-baseball size. A bunch of them are above the AG hood. But that seemed to work with the cherry tomato - who knows, maybe it'll work with some of the beefsteaks.
12 week tomato clone - maybe flowered too much, now has over a dozen blueberry-or-bigger tomatoes, biggest two squashed baseball size 12 week tomato clone - maybe flowered too much, now has over a dozen blueberry-or-bigger tomatoes, biggest two squashed baseball size

And of course I had to make a BLT after Katherine got me all hungry. And a bacon pizza, of course. Lots of tomatoes to get rid of this week from the outdoor gardens.

BLT, with splasher-grown summercrisp lettuce and a better bush tomato (grown outdoors, same variety as in AG now)

Now I have to add bacon to
Now I have to add bacon to the shopping list.

These are perfect tomatoes for a BLT.

Ham and cheese sound nice.
Ham and cheese sound nice. Now you've got me thinking about a BLT. Note to self: see if we have any bacon. I know we have the lettuce and tomato.

Thanks, Katherine. This
Thanks, Katherine. This variety isn't wildly productive, but I've never had a better-tasting tomato. Its outdoor clone-sister is bearing now, and I just had a slice on a sandwich. The kind of beefy tomato that makes a superb sandwich with nothing but bread and mayo - yummm. Though added some ham&cheese, too - just a touch, so as not to compete.

That's a nice looking tomato
That's a nice looking tomato plant! I just reduced my number of plants in my project down to 1 per pod today. I put the ones I removed in little cups with water. Maybe they'll sprout. Just couldn't throw them away without trying, lol.

The two fruits are growing
The two fruits are growing well, but the plant wasn't setting any more. Tried a couple weeks of Texas Tomato Food instead of GH nutrients, and then last week replaced the 6500K CFL with a 2700K (warmer) light. I'm not convinced any of that mattered, and I'll switch it back to 6500K+4200K and GH nutes tonight. But - it is flowering again, both inside the screen and above the hood. I think it's also set a few more fruit that just aren't plumping up yet. It's hard to keep the plant watered enough in summer temperatures - drinks too much.

Set two little fruit so far
Set two little fruit so far (wasn't clear when I took the pictures - now it's clear). Replaced the AG bulbs a couple days ago. The same day, I added about a quart of half strength (foliar strength) Texas Tomato Food to the reservoir, because it was conveniently to hand and the reservoir was empty. (Weekly refill was standard GH nutes again, though.) Between the two, it worked a treat - finally have tomato set, and the flower stems are stronger.

Since the cherry tomato did so well with branches going over the hood, I'll let some leaves go there for now. I don't think that'll work with a beefsteak variety, though. Trying hard to get more buds lower on the plant, pruning top suckers, swapped the lightbulbs side to side.

Now flowering, but right into
Now flowering, but right into the AG hood lights. Ordered new AG bulbs... It's a perfectly healthy plant, lush and brilliant green from top to bottom of the lightscreen volume. Just not flowering enough. Buds that formed lower on the stems atrophied - maybe from veg-grow nutes, maybe low light.

Buds didn't flower under
Buds didn't flower under transition nutes either, though they're bigger... Hood up to max now, and on bloom strength nutes as of yesterday. Top-pruning just a little bit.

I may try my new Texas Tomato Food nutes on this grow, but that's a one-part, whole-life cycle nutrient. I'd kinda like to get the thing flowering first.

The outdoor sibling of this clone's progenitor now looks like:

Mini buds didn't do much
Mini buds didn't do much under the aggressive growth nutes. Today switched to transition nutes (10ml each micro / bloom / grow) and turned on the CropLampSurround lights.
