Aerogarden Lightscreen Tomato Clone

I cloned my murdered beefsteak tomato plant in a jar of water. It rooted well, so I transferred it to my AG Deluxe with CropLampSurround lightscreen. The clone and its age-mate sister plant outside now (flowering):

Used mild growth nutrients (5ml each Micro/Grow/Bloom in 1 gallon water) for this week, and placed the lightscreen around it unlit, just to keep the lights reflected back on the plant:

better bush clone, using lightscreen from day 1, minus the lights until the AG hood clears the shelf slots

With the clone's stem resting on the bottom of the AG reservoir, I'm hoping it'll have a few extra inches of headroom.

2013/07/26: replaced AG lights, and gave some half-strength Texas Tomato Food (because it was the liquid on hand and the reservoir was low).

Harvest thru 12/1:
15 - first at 14 weeks, last at 28 weeks - terminated 12/17 due to spider mites

 Hi Gisette,

Looks nice and full. Is that the same variety I'm growing? I plan on aggressively pruning my tomato. I just trimmed off 1/3 of the suckers that formed after snipping out the growing tip. I know how out of control these puppies can get...

Beth

Happy enough. Lost power this
Happy enough. Lost power this afternoon, so pix taken with flash. Started back on GH nutes today, but using tap water. It hasn't rained much in weeks. There are 4 or 5 tomatoes of size on board, none ripening this week. I'm getting more aggressive about not letting it grow above the hood. It sets fruit fine, and they grow, but they have no support, so they just flop over and crack the stem when they get too big.

I'm getting kinda bored with this clone, and want a rematch with the sweet baby girl cherry tomato. Well, I'm bored with tomatoes at the moment, really...

Well, I harvested that
Well, I harvested that another-couple. And I wasn't impressed. They split, which is probably my fault for not topping up enough. But the flavor... It's hard to be fair. My very best tomatoes are harvesting now outside. But these weren't great. It seems like the plant loves the Texas Tomato Food. But it's putting that love into growing instead of ripening. I may go back to GH nutes on this grow.

19 week better bush clone - harvested 2, not impressed with flavor - back to GH nutes for next ripening still harvesting - 2 left tomatoes from AG lightscreen, rest outdoors

Finally got around to pruning
Finally got around to pruning yesterday. I love the way it keeps setting fruit above the hood. Unfortunately, once the fruit get bigger, the stem-above-hood falls over and doesn't do too well... And most of the fruit on those high stems gets BER. So, the remaining high fruit are probably doomed. But there are about 4 developing inside the lightscreen, and blooms, and lots more air space since I thinned. It's not enough to top-prune these - they grow lots of suckers and turn into a dense vegetation ball in the middle.

17 week better bush clone - about 7 fruit on board, flowering, freshly pruned yesterday, but still has some fruit above hood 09.29. 2013 17 week better bush clone - heavy pruning yesterday included thinning the middle 17 week better bush clone - current biggest fruit and some flowers

Most of the too-many little
Most of the too-many little fruit ended up getting BER and got tossed. Decided to switch back to the Texas Tomato Food 2 weeks ago - it's easier to mix, anyway - and the plant has been happier since. Still flowering, and setting more fruit, both above and below the light hood. The first two fruits are ripening - could have picked one already, but have plenty of outdoor tomatoes.

14 week tomato clone - two about ready to harvest 14 week tomato clone - setting fruit above the hood, and under the hood 14 week tomato clone - about ready to harvest first 2 fruit

Now THAT'S a good looking
Now THAT'S a good looking sandwich. I replanted the tomatoes that I removed from my original Mega kit yesterday. They had developed roots about 3 inches long. I have them in a 7 with the extended arm. So far, they look good. I just hope they take off like the first ones. It's day 20 and they're already 5 inches tall. I have 5 branches and should be pruning by next week. I'll take more pictures tomorrow at the 3 week mark.
