Aerogarden Lightscreen Tomato Clone

I cloned my murdered beefsteak tomato plant in a jar of water. It rooted well, so I transferred it to my AG Deluxe with CropLampSurround lightscreen. The clone and its age-mate sister plant outside now (flowering):

Used mild growth nutrients (5ml each Micro/Grow/Bloom in 1 gallon water) for this week, and placed the lightscreen around it unlit, just to keep the lights reflected back on the plant:

better bush clone, using lightscreen from day 1, minus the lights until the AG hood clears the shelf slots

With the clone's stem resting on the bottom of the AG reservoir, I'm hoping it'll have a few extra inches of headroom.

2013/07/26: replaced AG lights, and gave some half-strength Texas Tomato Food (because it was the liquid on hand and the reservoir was low).

Harvest thru 12/1:
15 - first at 14 weeks, last at 28 weeks - terminated 12/17 due to spider mites

Terminated the plant this
Terminated the plant this week - spider mites. Got one last fruit...

Next up for the lightscreen is a rematch for the sweet baby girl cherry tomato - with one plant instead of two this time. But for now, I've got a spot to put the Christmas tree.

Will probably harvest another tomorrow. This week gave the plant rain water instead of tap. It would probably like half and half...

Harvested 4 tomatoes this
Harvested 4 tomatoes this week, pruned, and ... decided it's time to start this garden's replacement tomato. There were a lot of brown leaves puffing fungus while I pruned. And though this has gotten into a steady production mode, it's still nowhere near as productive as the sweet baby girl cherry grow. I want a rematch on that one.

26 week tomato clone - trimmed off flowers after picture, final 9-10 fruit on board (probably)

So, harvested another 2 fruit today, and there are about 7-8 left to finish. Picked off flowers to help it along.

Happy plant, still getting
Happy plant, still getting steady harvest. The fruit are very cracked lately (not usually as bad as this picture!) I think that's partly from my chopping off the third main vine last weekend. The remaining vines are growing stronger. Lots of fruit on board, though they're smaller with so many growing in parallel. Still using tap water + GH nutes at the moment, with a little bit of nutes in the topping-up gallon of water. It easily needs over a gallon of topping up per week. The new Aerogarden AeroVoir refilling system (or home-made equivalent) would be helpful for these pushing-the-limit tomato grows. Refilling by hand every other day also works.

25 week tomato clone - a lot of cracking lately, but steady fruit production 25 week tomato clone - a lot of cracking lately (usually not this bad), but steady fruit production

Plant is producing really
Plant is producing really well at the moment. Harvested another fruit, another is almost ready, and another clutch starting to ripen - 7 on board, and no BER. Maybe this plant likes my tap water + GH nutes. I should feed it tap water more often.

Harvested a couple fruit.
Harvested a couple fruit. Need to prune and truss the plant. Light on pictures this week. Spent hours outside in cold and wind taking down the tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, pea fences, washing pots. Gardened out.

2 harvested from the Aerogarden full-size tomato the smaller AG tomato on a roast beef sandwich (splasher lettuce)

Edit: did my AG chores tonight - pruned and refilled and ripening another tomato:

22 week tomato clone - picked 2 more, another ripening, heavy pruning and trussing today 22 week tomato clone - picked 2 more, another ripening, heavy pruning and trussing today

Ripening again - not the ones
Ripening again - not the ones I was expecting to ripen next. Cool. Seems to have around 7 fruit of size on board, and since switching back to GH nutes, the little guys aren't developing BER. On the UFF nutes, it flowered a lot and set lots of little fruit that BER'd out, so it was kind of a wash.

21 week tomato clone - 2 ripening, maybe 7 fruit of size - no BER since switched back to GH nutes

On tap water this week again - still no rain. Higher nute concentration to ripen those fruit well.

Yes, Beth, same variety. And
Yes, Beth, same variety. And yes, pruning off all but 1/3 of the suckers is a great idea. Yours looks great!

Because of the short internodes on this variety, it can get especially gnarly in the middle - branches 2" apart and intertwined, each spawning more suckers everytime you cut one, make for quite a thicket.

Unfortunately, this time I started with a clone, and it had lots of basal branching, and I thought that was a good thing. Maybe not... Oh, well. It's bearing fruit.
