Outdoor Eggplant 2012

This year's eggplant gets a pot. Until I acquire a family of 8 to feed, I'm not growing an eggplant in a growbox again. Though it did get a big pot, and a half-growbox nute strip. The transplant was about 6 weeks old.

Harvests: 22 (first ~7/28, small, but I needed it for ratatouille) - ended 10/6

 Terminated the eggplant

Terminated the eggplant yesterday. One fruit turned yellow at a pretty small size. I decided that meant it wasn't really growing anymore. At any rate, I've eaten enough eggplant.

Eggplant suddenly got huge,

Eggplant suddenly got huge, and it's getting busy with the fruit development. Leaves look kinda bugged. That's OK. They taste good.

I grew eggplant in a growbox

I grew eggplant in a growbox last year and got way too many for me to eat. Thus the more constrained pot this year.

Depends what variety of eggplant you grow. Fairy Tale is a small round bush, easy in a large pot. Most are bigger, like 24"-48" tall. They're fairly stocky, but could use a stake for support. Not a really a vine.

The growboxes are PVC plastic, I believe. Safe enough.

Beth, did you start them in
Beth, did you start them in the Aerogarden and then transfer to an earthbox? I don't think they were in anything I got so I figure you planted seeds yourself. Are these like a bush or do they need to grow on a trellis? i don't have an earthbox but a smaller thing similar to one and with a plastic trellis at one side of it so I can gorw things up. I got a number of pots at Dollar General in plastic though and plan to plant in that. Wonder if I should have been more cautious because of plastic leeching. I didn't think of that. I was just looking at something large enough to put a Meyer lemon in and some other trees and plants. but an earthbox is plastic, too isn't it or is that vinyl?

Why are you not going to put
Why are you not going to put eggplant in a grow box but rather in a pot? Did you get too many? Or were they just too small? I plant to plant some in FL this winter if you can call it that. It is our growing season. I plan to have eggplant parmesan with marinara sauce.

We've had some gorgeous

We've had some gorgeous cool-for-July weather, and the eggplant's setting more fruit. Not ripening them very fast... but I picked one undersized for ratatouille anyway.
